The Detroit Lions quarterback Shaun Hill accused a New England Patriots’ defender of trying to break his left arm during the Thanksgiving Day game, in which the Patriots covered the NFL spread and achieved their ninth win of this 2010 Season.
According to a Mlive.com report, the incident occurred in the second quarter when Hill ran a quarterback sneak from the Patriots’ 2-yard line and extended his arm in an attempt to score the touchdown.
“That’s why I eventually gave up the ball,” Hill told the newspaper. “Somebody was down there (in the pile) literally trying to break my arm, which is already broken. Literally, trying. And, you know, I guess (it) wasn’t seen (by officials).”
Hill has been playing with a fracture in his non-throwing forearm, which was broken five weeks ago during the game in Week 6 against the New York Giants, and last Thursday’s game was his third straight start instead of injured Matthew Stafford.
For his part, Stafford remains in rehab and the Lions will not rule out the possibility that he could return this season as Dr. James Andrews said that Stafford’s shoulder injury will not require surgery.
Hill played the entire game in the 45-24 loss to the Patriots, in which he was 27-of-46 passing for 285 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The quarterback did not score on the controversial play, but picked up a first down.
Lions’ head coach Jim Schwartz wasn’t concerned about the risk of worsening the injury of his backup quarterback. However, Hill said he had no problem with the play call, injury or no injury.
“I loved the call,” he said. “Absolutely loved it. I have no qualms about running that play — one-armed or whatever. I loved the call.”
The New England Patriots had no comment on Shaun Hill’s accusation.
