The strangest sports news story that I’ve seen in a long time came across the internet this morning. It seems that an order of Roman Catholic nuns in Baltimore has sold a Honus Wagner baseball card at auction for $262,000.

That’s a lot of money for the collection plate. The card was left to the School Sisters of Notre Dame in a will and the funds raised will go to help ministries in over 30 countries around the world.

This is an extremely rare baseball card that we’re talking about here folks. The Honus Wagner T206 was made between 1909 and 1911 and at this time there are only 60 left that are known about. Of those 60 there are those that aren’t in good shape, can’t be sold or are sitting somewhere in a major collection.

These nuns just got a great deal in that will. And now they are a part of baseball card trading/selling lore. Also part of the legend is the card buyer – Doug Walton of Knoxville, Tennessee who owns a card shop and is a collector.
